Please no more dress down Friday

I live in the UK, if you are reading this outside the UK you might be misled into thinking that the average Brit is well dressed. The UK has a pedigree of tailoring that spans hundred of years. Unfortunately, in the last two decades, standards have slipped. The high street, for men, has become segregated into youth orientated fashion or expensive off the shelf-products. Quality, tailoring and choice have gradually decreased. Apologies to my American cousins but dress down Friday shows how bad things have gotten. Many adult men arrive at work wearing leisure wear that is elasticated, nylon and shapeless. This is not dressing down this is not dressing at all. How did we arrive at this sorry state? Much of it has to do with peer pressure, the urge to conform to the norm. Unfortunately, the norm is unflattering to the average man. The suit did not just appear it evolved, and it evolved with the owner. As the passage of time alters an individuals shape and size, a more flattering cut of material can be applied. Jeans and t-shirts do not evolve. What looks good on a slim twenty year does not guarantee a perfect fit at forty. So let's try and regain our dignity and clothe ourselves in ways which celebrate us, rather than some out of date model of manhood based on Jeans and T-shirts.
