Tie-less intent

At a recent event I attended, a sales executive commented on my tie, namely that I was wearing one. He proceeded to lecture me that the tie was dead, and why was I wearing an such an anachronistic garment of clothing. He explained that at a recent meeting with an important client, they had worn flip-flops and shorts and he had felt foolish talking to them in a suit.
I pointed out that they probably wanted to put him on the back foot, by making him feel awkward. They had the advantage in the negotiations, by exploiting his urge to conform. Beach wear is not a dress code that I feel is going to be adopted in boardrooms across the world. I'm sure dressing down for a meeting is more of an indication of your value of that meeting. Whilst putting on a well made suit and tie indicates your serious intent.
