I'll skip enlightenment

The way I dress sends a message, and like all broadcasts the message may be misinterpreted by the audience. To some, the idea of wearing a jacket and smart shoes indicates that, in some way, you put too much importance on appearance. This is usually highlighted by people who profess to have no interest in clothes, but who spend a great deal of money on jeans and the right docker boots.
The idea that your appearance is unimportant in an age where we all spend too much time running on treadmills is amusing.
I ride a bicycle to work, and being a responsible parent, I like to set a good example and wear a helmet. Modern bicycle helmets apart from looking pretty dorky, flatten your hair. Each day I wander into the toilets, at work, and comb my hair ready for the day ahead. A company director saw me doing this and said that was what he liked about me that I was *old school*. Being forty and being told your "old school" is nothing new, my son thinks everything I do is old school.
But just like wearing a watch carrying a comb is classed as out of date. Many of my peer group seem to have shaved their hair off, explaining that they were tired of dealing with their hair, as if they had reached some point of enlightenment in their life.
If enlightenment means shaving my hair and taking no joy in my appearance, I'll skip enlightenment and enjoy life.
